Networks and Applications >> Dr. David Stephens - Center for Plastic Surgery

Dr. David Stephens - Initially, Dr. Stephens' infrastructure centered around a Hewlett Packard Server running Windows NT 4.0 and an Exchange e-mail system. While this was a strong system at the time of purchase, its resources were becoming too antiquated for both the changes in software and the growth of Dr. Stephens' practice. The Exchange server also required the routine administration normally provided by an in-house IT staff.

The client workstations, although adequate to run Windows '98, did not meet the specifications for a more HIPAA-compliant operating system. Office administrator Deborah Triguiero was also looking for computer support for both ongoing infrastructure function and their transition from Wisdom to Nextech practice management systems.

The ProTI solution: Lowering technology costs enabled ProTI to offer Dr. Stephens quality hardware at a fraction of the cost of his original system. The server, with a Pentium 4 processor, one gigabyte of RAM, a RAID1 hard drive system and a Travan 10/20 tape backup drive, gave them the speed and capacity necessary to keep up with software changes and practice growth. Windows 2003 Server on the server coupled with Windows 2000 Professional on the new workstations and Norton Corporate Anti-Virus provided them with the security necessary to bring them within HIPAA compliance and safeguard financial data. Remote administration (via Terminal Services) has enabled ProTI engineers to monitor infrastructure health and resolve issues in a fraction of the time of a service call.

Shutting down the Exchange server in favor of processing office e-mail through their existing Internet Service Provider's (ISP) mail server not only added no additional costs, but eliminated the administrative overhead associated with an in-house e-mail server. ProTI worked with Dr. Stephens' ISP, Roadside Multimedia, in establishing and testing e-mail accounts.

Although much of the migration from Wisdom to Nextech practice management systems could be handled remotely by Nextech engineers, ProTI initially established the necessary remote connectivity and worked with Nextech in establishing server backup and workstation installs. ProTI was also on hand to set up equipment for staff training.

Networks and Applications >> Dr. Peter Jacobsen - Maple Valley Family Dental

With technology becoming increasingly cost-effective, a digital practice is not only a means to increase productivity and patient awareness, but also the most economic when building a new office. Which is why Dr. Peter Jacobsen worked with ProTI in developing his digital practice. Digital x-rays sensors and intraoral cameras in operatories and a digital panoramic x-ray machine, all integrated into their computer infrastructure, results in a fast and thorough exchange of information for both administration and patient education.

A P4-based server with a RAID1 hard drive array and Travan Tape backup is the powerhouse of the infrastructure. It serves as the Eaglesoft server for four operatories and six workstations The operatories are equipped with workstations based on the Shuttle XPC chassis. These are optimal for the operatory environment because of their diminutive size and quiet cooling system. Attached to each of the Shuttles is an intraoral camera, Schick X-ray sensor, two LCD monitors and a voice recognition system.

Rounding off the network is three mid-tower workstations for the administrative staff. They are as powerful as the operatory workstations, but costs were reduced by using a larger, air-cooled chassis - size is not a consideration for the application.

The addition of two new Athlon-based Shuttle workstations only amplified the fact that the other three of Dr. Kerst's administrative workstations had become antiquated. ProTI replaced the Pentium 2/ Windows '98 machines with mid-tower, P4-based computers and Windows XP professional. Along with integrating the new workstations into the existing infrastructure, ProTI also extended their fax line to a Canon multifunction outside of the consult office and performed upgrades to their DSN and Consult Pro software. ProTI also worked in conjunction with DSN and Cypress Communications in establishing remote administration via pcAnywhere and their DSL line. This lead to configuring telecommuting via Remote Desktop for the administrative staff.

Networks and Applications >> Dr. Terry Thomas

The two computers at the front desk of Dr. Thomas' Periodontics practice were his workhorses. They acted as the server and schedulers for the practice's DSN practice management software. The hardware (Dell P3 mid-towers) was functioning well, but the operating system (Windows '98) was not robust or HIPAA compliant. The anti-virus software on all of the workstations was outdated and the backup system was in need of updating.

ProTI upgraded the front desk workstations to Windows 2000 Professional, installed Norton Anti-Virus on all of the workstations in the office and installed and configured a Travan tape backup system.
